Gráinne and Tim, the founders of Metalman Brewing, have always enjoyed discovering new beer. Back in 2011, good beer was hard to find in Ireland, so they took a somewhat dramatic step to try and address that by quitting the rat-race and opening up their own brewery.
Back then in 2011, the first beer, Metalman Pale Ale, was brewed under contract in Tipperary before finally moving to their own Waterford city brewery in 2012. Metalman’s beers were available on draught only until the 2 struck again and in 2015 we finally got our hands on those colourful 330cl cans.
Back in December 2017, in another somewhat dramatic step to try and address the availability of good beer, they opened their first bar in Waterford city, and this gives them much more opportunity to engage with their customers.
In February and in homage to another Waterford institution, they released a hoppy session amber called Red Lead – you’ll have to ask the story behind that one when you’re in the Bar. You might need some Blaager to accompany it!!!
By the way, the name of the brewery is inspired by a seafaring navigational aid called the Metalman which was erected in 1823 (and still stands) on Waterford’s Tramore coast. Now there’s another question for the barman!
